Want a Book Coach? You'll Have to Make Some Calls

Now that you’ve made a list of qualities you’re looking for in a book coach and found several solid candidates, it’s time to pick up the phone or hop on Zoom. If you’re an introvert, don’t panic - we’re going to make this as painless as possible.

Choose Three Great Options and Call Them

Chances are you’ve studied your list of candidates and have a pretty good idea which ones would be a good fit for you.

Narrow down your options to the top three, then hop on a call with each of them for at least an hour.

Here are some questions to ask yourself during the call:

  • Do they have a list of references?

  • Is it easy to book time with them, or hard?

  • Are they willing to accommodate my needs?

  • Do they know what they’re talking about?

  • Is their writing process similar to yours?

  • Would I enjoy working with them?

  • Do they ask good questions?

  • How do they communicate?

  • Is anything unclear?

Note: if you are seeing communication “red flags” now, chances are they’re not going away. Better to choose a candidate without them than take the risk of spending time and money on a book coach who isn’t a good fit!

Ask for References and Call Them

It may be tempting to skip this step, but don’t! While you’re on the call with potential book coaches, ask if they have any references.

If possible, ask for references from someone who:

  • Is similar to you

  • Wrote a book like yours

  • Has a similar writing process

  • Used similar services as you are

Don’t stop there! Once you have a list of references, give each one a call and ask questions like these:

  • What superpower sets them apart from other options?

  • What was your communication like?

  • Would you work with them again?

  • How knowledgeable are they?

  • Were they easy to work with?

  • Did they explain things well?
