JOSH'S STORY

As an entrepreneur, Josh Steimle has used thought leadership to generate over $10M for his businesses. He’s the author of over 300+ articles in publications like Fortune, Time, Forbes, Fast Company, and Mashable, as well as books like 60 Days to LinkedIn Mastery, and Chief Marketing Officers at Work.

Josh has been featured on national and international TV and radio, and interviewed on more than 100 podcasts. He is a TEDx speaker and keynotes events worldwide.

Josh founded MWI, a global marketing agency with offices in the US and Asia, and is also the founder of 7 Systems, a consultancy providing leadership training and services to entrepreneurs, executives, academics, and government institutions.

TOTALLY BROKE, ALMOST BANKRUPT

In 1999, Josh was a bushy-tailed, bright-eyed, young and optimistic entrepreneur starting his first “real” company—MWI, a digital marketing agency. He started it while he was a college student, grew it to ten employees, sold it in 2003, and started over.

Then everything went downhill.

Eventually, burned out and hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, Josh gave up on the start-up lifestyle glamorized in the business magazines.

He committed to work only Monday through Friday and leave work at 5 pm. He promised to pay himself, no matter what. And he committed to exercise and eat better.

And it worked. By 2013, he was once again ready to grow what had been a scaled-down version of the agency he ran before.

ENTREPRENEUR TO AUTHOR

At this time, Josh happened to get introduced to an editor at Forbes, who asked Josh to write for the publication.

Those articles for Forbes turned out to be just what Josh’s agency needed—they sparked interest from lead after lead for the firm.

Writing for Forbes led to opportunities to write for more than two dozen other publications, including Time, Business Insider, Fortune, TechCrunch, and Entrepreneur. Those articles, in turn, led to speaking opportunities at events like TEDx and conferences in Dubai, Singapore, and London.

This success with writing led Josh to wonder, “If writing for publications led to all this exposure for MWI and me, what would happen if I wrote a book?”

Chief Marketing Officers at Work was Josh’s first book—and Josh’s speaker’s fee soon doubled, and then tripled. Suddenly people talked about him as an “author,” and with the label came a new level of authority and respect.

Why?

A book is something real. Something tangible. Nobody writes and publishes a book overnight; authorship is serious work, and readers respect that as a clue that an entrepreneur is “in it” for the long haul.

BECOMING THE BOOK COACH

By 2016, Josh had written over 300 articles for dozens of publications, published his first book, and met Richard Branson on the Virgin founder’s private island.

Shortly afterward, an executive asked Josh, “Can you coach me to become a thought leader?” That question opened up a new opportunity—helping entrepreneurs to do what he had done for MWI.

By 2017, Josh had started a separate business to coach entrepreneurs on a framework he developed called the 7 Systems of Influence, but quickly realized one interesting difference between those who experienced success influencing others and those who struggled:

The vast majority of the truly successful thought leaders had a book.

Their book sat at the center of their other activities, both supporting them and causing them.

If they were getting speaking gigs, it was because of the book. If people wanted to work at their company, it was because of the book. And if clients wanted to work with their company…it was because of the book.

Josh saw that you didn’t have to be a famous, bestselling author like Tim Ferriss, Jim Collins, or Sheryl Sandberg. Lesser-known entrepreneurs at small businesses were making millions in sales—not in book sales, but sales in their businesses—just by getting a few dozen copies into the right hands.

Josh began offering one-on-one book coaching services to executives, but then launched the Published Author Masterclass to work with all types of entrepreneurs ranging from those just getting started up to founders with billion-dollar businesses. Josh has worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs, helping them discover the book inside them and get it into print.
